My ongoing project on a Hillman Hunter DL Estate. |
The
Car
The car is a 1975 Hillman Hunter DL Estate. It started it's life as a utility vehicle for a local electricity company. After a hard working life there, my grandfather acquired it in an auction as the company wanted to get rid of some of it's vehicles. The car was then put to use on his estate in Tobago as an "estate car", doing lots of transport and odd jobs. It came back to Trinidad with it's engine wrecked and generally ready for the junk yard. It was then given to my father who did a restoration job on it, making it a good working car again. This was the family's main car for quite a while and my father used it allot to transport materials when expanding the house. It then started to burn oil at quite a rate and was parked up and was even considered for scrapping. After a few more years it was given to me, In August 1999 I began my work on it. And so It is now about to begin yet another revived life. |
What
has to be done and What is being Done
As it is the car is not in such bad shape, I have all the trim and original parts. The major damage is in the structure of the car, a common weak spot in the hunter, the floor is now rusted badly. The body was in all right condition but , again, lots of rust .I did the body job myself and the car is now in a light blue (you can check it out in the pics section below) and in good condition. Engine work has been started but on my budget , it would be a long time before this thing could move on it's own again! As far as the floor goes, someone would have to weld that for me. The last part of restoration would be the re-doing of the interior as the original fabrics have become old and worn, The dashboard is still in excellent condition for it's age. In the end the car should be one of the best specimens of its type in the country. |
